SPORT NEWS: Pakistan suffer heavy blows, captain ousted from the HWC 2018

In a major setback for the Pakistan hockey team, skipper Muhammad Rizwan Sr was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after sustaining a finger injury. The International Hockey Federation also handed a one-match suspension to Pakistani midfielder and vice-captain Ammad Butt. Ruling him out from the match against the Netherlands, last of the Pool D and further pile on the miseries for them in the ongoing Men’s Hockey World Cup on Thursday.

The Pakistan hockey team suffered a major blow when skipper Muhammad Rizwan Sr got ousted from the tourney. The replacement is yet to be named, which will also need clearance from the tournament’s technical committee and official doctor.

Ammad Butt on the other hand, was suspended after he was in a rough tackle with Malaysia’s Faisal Saari while rushing to defend a penalty corner in the 40th minute of the game. The Malaysian team then lodged a complaint to the FIH against Butt. The match had ended in a 1-1 draw.


The FIH then released a media statement to announce their decision.

Breach of code of conduct (deliberate, reckless or careless physical contact between players in the course of play) towards Faisal Saari (player No. 10 of Malaysia) in the 40th minute of mach #16, Malaysia vs Pakistan, on 5 December 2018,” the letter sent to Pakistan camp read.

“Following an incident at the 40th minute of the game Malaysia-Pakistan yesterday, Pakistan player Ammad Butt has been suspended for one match by the FIH Technical Delegate,” read the official statement from the apex body.

However, Pakistan hockey team manager Hasan Sardar expressed discontent over the FIH’s decision and termed it an “afterthought”.

“It’s an afterthought. If we see the video, it’s clear he didn’t do a harsh dash. We’ve appealed to the FIH and hoping that it would be accepted”, Sardar said.

“If you look at the video, then I don’t think the Ammad’s dash was harsh, which is what he has been punished for. Neither was he given a card for it nor a penalty corner was given against Pakistan. So this is an afterthought,” he said.
