R. Kelly has finally confirmed — through his lawyer, Steve Greenberg — he was indeed married to Aaliyah when she was just 15 years old.
Greenberg went on Good Morning America Friday morning to discuss the recent allegations of rape, sexual misconduct, and sexual abuse against his client.
Reporter Linsey Davis questioned Greenberg about the marriage at one point specifically asking the lawyer if Kelly was married to Aaliyah when she was just 15 years old (below):
“Was he married to Aaliyah when she was 15? So then, 15 is not of the age of legal consent, right?”
Stuck in a corner, Greenberg had no excuse for his client — and was forced to acknowledge for the first time that, yes, R. Kelly “was married to her when she was 15.”
He then brought up Elvis Presley‘s marriage to Priscilla, whom he met when she was just 14 — despite the facts A) it happened over 50 years ago and B) Priscilla was *21* when they got hitched. Overruled, counselor.
Only the next move was the sketchiest, as Greenberg pinned the blame for that marriage not on Kelly, but on Aaliyah, arguing she lied about her age in order to walk down the aisle (below):
“My understanding is that she did not claim to be 15. And in order to get married she had to lie about her age, And [R. Kelly] is saying he had no idea.”
It’s a dubious defense, one would imagine, but at the very least it’s the first time anyone from Kelly’s camp has admitted that, yes, the singer was married to an underage girl at one point — and a very famous one, at that.
