SPORT NEWS: Dhoni will make the most of Australian conditions -Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar believes that MS Dhoni has it in him to exploit the big Australian grounds by rotating the strike more often, instead of going for the big shots in order to get the runs going and reignite his form before the ICC Cricket World Cup gets underway.

“We may not see the MS Dhoni who hits the big sixes on Indian grounds or English grounds because the Australian grounds are big. But he is so good with his fitness that he will be able to convert the ones into twos and twos into threes on large-sized Australian grounds,” Gavaskar was quoted saying.

The World cup winning captain will be contesting in his first One Day International series after a long time, since his last appearance coming against the West Indies in November 2018. Chief selector MSK Prasad made the gutsy decision of dropping Dhoni in the three-match T20I series against Australia while giving chances to Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik in the shortest format of the game.

But opinions have taken a shift, as MS Dhoni has been called in for the T20I series versus New Zealand, while Gavaskar thinks that the start of Dhoni’s good run with the bat will be against the nation down under, where he’ll get to face the music on good batting tracks while facing the older ball after coming down the order.

“I believe Dhoni will be able to make the most of these Australian conditions where the pitches flatten out after the new ball,” Gavaskar further added.
