SPORT NEWS: Kenin out-muscles Schmiedlova to win title

American Sofia Kenin secured her second trophy in two weeks after an easy 6-3, 6-0 win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia at the WTA Hobart International on Saturday.

It was also the 20-year-old’s first WTA singles title. Karolína Schmiedlová returned serve exceptionally well as she won close to 50% of her receiving points.

This allowed Schmiedlová to win 6 return games which was vital in the Slovak gaining the win. While it was impressive to watch Anna Karolína Schmiedlová return, the Slovak had her issues while serving.



During the win against Bencic, Schmiedlová only won 66% of her service games. It is going to be vital for Anna Karolína Schmiedlová to improve her serve as she will not get as many opportunities to break in a final.

On the other side of the court, Sofia Kenin had a comfortable semifinal win as she won in straight sets. Kenin served exceptionally well as she only lost 1 service game in the entire match.

Kenin complemented her serve with exceptional returning as she won 4 break points. Kenin has had an exceptional tournament as she is yet to lose a single set. Kenin was in supreme form and she is going to be hard to beat in further tournaments.

“I’m so happy to have gotten this title,” Kenin said adding: “It was my first year (here) and I’m looking forward to coming back here for many more years to come.”

Kenin needed only one hour and 11 minutes to wrap up the victory on Saturday, winning nine games in straight after a 3-3 tie in the first set.
